Why Every Executive Needs a Working Knowledge of AI

Date
08 of September, 2025

A few years ago, executives could delegate most technology questions to their CTO or CIO and still make sound decisions. That era is over. Artificial intelligence has moved from a back office cost center straight to the boardroom. It shapes everything, from marketing campaigns and customer support to supply chains, hiring and product design. Whether you’re running a global enterprise or a local business, you are operating in an AI-driven market whether you like it or not.

One of the biggest challenges I see leaders coming up against today is that they have not yet updated their own AI literacy. This does not mean learning to code, though I always recommend taking a basic programming course at least once to appreciate what coding really involves, nor is it about becoming a technical specialist. The real need lies in understanding what AI can and cannot do, how it affects your strategy, how to ask the right questions and spot value-creation opportunities, and, last but not least, how to guide its responsible use across the organization. Without core knowledge, executives run the risk of blindly chasing hype, misallocating resources or overlooking very real risks around ethics and trust.

Yet leaders who do invest in their AI literacy will see three major benefits. First, they can spot opportunities to apply AI in ways that drive measurable value rather than get stuck on flashy POCs. Second, they are better positioned to protect their organizations from being outpaced by competitors who use AI more effectively. And third, they can engage their teams with confidence, inspiring innovation instead of fear across both business and technical functions.

Upgrading your AI literacy does not mean becoming an expert overnight. It means building a foundation that allows you to navigate conversations, evaluate proposals, identify value and make strategic choices around AI with more clarity. Digital literacy became essential two decades ago. AI literacy is now the baseline for effective leadership, regardless of the industry you work in or the position you hold.

Which is why Porto Business School created the AI Strategy for Executives program. Following two successful cohorts, it is now entering its third edition. The program is built for decision-makers who want to cut through the noise, grasp the fundamentals and translate them into strategic action. Under the guidance of Program Director and Professor Christina Stathopoulos, the curriculum has been carefully curated to ensure participants leave with confidence to lead their organizations into this new era.
