How artificial intelligence is transforming leadership and decision-making in the business world

Christina Stathopoulos teaches the AI for Business module in the International MBA at Porto Business School and is the founder of Dare to Data. An expert in data science and artificial intelligence, she joined PBS in 2024 and has stood out for her practical and strategic approach to teaching the impact of AI on business. In this interview, she shares her journey and reflects on the challenges, opportunities, and the role of leadership in the digital age.

Can you tell us a bit about your background and how you became involved in teaching AI for Business at Porto Business School?

I come from a background in statistics and data science, with industry experience most recently at Google and Waze. I left Big Tech in 2022 to found my own company, Dare to Data, shifting my focus to helping others build data and AI literacy as well as product evangelism. I became involved in teaching AI for Business at Porto Business School after an invitation from the Dean, who had previously collaborated with me on AI education initiatives. It was a natural fit, blending my passion for higher education with data and AI accessibility, and it has been a real joy empowering future leaders at PBS!

What do you find most exciting about teaching MBA students how to leverage AI in real-world business contexts?

What excites me most is seeing students connect the dots between AI concepts and real-world business impact, and along the way realizing that AI isn’t just for tech experts. It’s a strategic tool that they can use to drive innovation and improve decision-making. That shift in mindset, watching them gain confidence and understanding in the AI space, is incredibly rewarding.

What are the most pressing challenges and opportunities that AI presents to today’s business leaders?

One of the most pressing challenges AI presents for business leaders today is using it responsibly, a subject we cover in depth during my AI for Business course. Responsible AI use means minimizing risks like bias, lack of transparency and regulatory non-compliance. But when done right, it’s actually a powerful opportunity; it builds trust, enhances brand reputation and can even act as a competitive edge.

In your opinion, how can a strong understanding of AI contribute to more strategic and innovative leadership?

A strong understanding of AI enables leaders to move beyond buzzwords and integrate AI with a realistic vision, allowing them to ask better questions and spot opportunities others might miss. It shifts their focus from reacting to trends, to shaping them! With this foundation, leaders can better drive value within their organizations and compete in the age of AI, which I ultimately hope to inspire them to do upon completion of my course.
