By Lucas Theobald – Brazilian | International MBA 2024/2025 | Porto Business School
Choosing to pursue an MBA in Portugal was the result of a period of deep reflection about my professional journey. I had reached a turning point in my career and felt the need to clearly define the direction I wanted to take in the long term.
Although I was comfortable in the position I held, I realized that I needed to broaden my knowledge, develop new skills, and become a more well-rounded professional. Until then, my career had been entirely built in the financial sector, working across different companies and roles. The MBA represented a unique chance to explore new horizons — both professionally and personally — as it would also be my first international experience.
Expanding My Market Perspective and Strengthening Core Skills
From the start, my main goal with the International MBA was to expand my view of the business landscape and strengthen my knowledge base to prepare for leadership roles across different industries — not just finance. I also saw the program as a strategic opportunity to build a strong and lasting global network.
Why I Chose Porto Business School
During my research, I focused on business schools in Portugal and Spain, seeking a cultural environment similar to Brazil’s, but one that could also challenge me to grow. Porto Business School immediately stood out — not just for its academic reputation and modern curriculum, but especially for the strong sense of community I experienced when I visited the campus in March 2024.
I was warmly welcomed, and it became clear to me that this would be a truly transformational journey, not just another credential on my CV.
Customizing My MBA Experience
Throughout the program, I’ve made a conscious effort to personalize my MBA journey. I selected electives focused on business strategy, with the goal of complementing my technical background in finance. This combination has equipped me to pursue strategic and leadership roles in companies across a wide range of industries.
I also took part in a one-week immersion program at ESCP Berlin, where we explored the German work culture and the process of launching new ventures — an experience that significantly broadened my global business perspective.
In addition, I fully engaged with the networking events and social initiatives promoted by the school, which were key in helping me form strong connections with classmates from diverse professional backgrounds.
Bringing Finance Expertise Into the Classroom
My previous role as a Business Controlling Manager at Creditas — a Brazilian fintech unicorn — has been a valuable asset in the MBA environment. I’ve been able to contribute to technical discussions, but I’ve also learned immensely by listening to viewpoints different from my own. This exchange has been incredibly enriching and has shown me that even in areas where I feel confident, there’s always room to grow.
Looking Ahead: Finance and Leadership on a Global Scale
After completing the MBA, I plan to continue working in finance, but with the flexibility to apply my skills in different industries and regions. My goal is to take on leadership roles where I can combine my previous experience with the strategic insights gained during the program.
I’m still considering whether to remain in Europe or return to Brazil. There are strong professional opportunities at home, but I also see great value in gaining international work experience, which could add a unique dimension to my career.
For now, I am fully committed to the MBA at Porto Business School — a decision that was carefully thought out and has already proven to be a powerful driver of both professional and personal growth.
