Managing oneself as a brand: promise, value, and differentiation to inspire trust

The idea that leaders should be managed as brands is not new. As early as 1997, Jennifer Aaker demonstrated that brands possess personality, just like people, and that this dimension influences how they are perceived. Since then, personal branding has become central for those who lead.

A few years later, Leslie de Chernatony (2001) emphasized that strong brands are built through the consistent creation of value — a principle directly applicable to leadership: a reputation is only consolidated when there is tangible impact on teams, clients, and society.

In parallel, Kevin Lane Keller (1993) reinforced the importance of defining a sustainable differentiator, the element that makes a brand stand out and remain memorable. For leaders, this differentiation translates into vision, leadership style, and communication.

More recently, Sergey Gorbatov and Angela Lane (2018) brought in the perspective of talent management, reminding us that a leader’s personal brand is also measured by the ability to attract, develop, and inspire people.

Current contributions update and expand this vision. Szántó (2025) identifies five critical dimensions of modern personal branding: credibility, differentiation, digital presence, reputation, and professional network. Aaker (2025) reinforces authenticity and dynamism as pillars of any brand in the digital age. France et al. (2025) highlight the concept of digital brand equity, where value is not just visibility, but the capacity to build long-term online relationships. Finally, Kongsri & Jaroenwanit (2024) show that a strong personal brand identity depends on authentic self-expression, professionalism, and transparency on social media.

Thus, managing oneself as a brand requires clarity of promise, consistency of value, strategic differentiation, and digital authenticity. More than self-promotion, it is about aligning identity and impact to leave a credible and inspiring legacy.
