On March 18, at 6 PM, the Innovation X Hub at Porto Business School is hosting the Impactalk “Blue Bioeconomy”, a session dedicated to the crucial role of Blue Forests—ecosystems formed by macroalgae typical of the Portuguese coast, essential for marine biodiversity and the regulation of nutrient cycles such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and carbon.

These underwater forests play a fundamental role in coastal protection, climate change mitigation, and the creation of habitats for a wide range of marine species. The session will explore their key characteristics, challenges, and opportunities, highlighting biotechnological applications, innovative carbon capture solutions, active conservation efforts, and the impact of the blue bioeconomy on ocean sustainability.

Guest Speakers:

  • Ruben Jorge – Founder of WEDOTECH and CarbonBlue, specializing in sustainable innovation, bioengineering, and algae-based carbon capture solutions.
  • Leonel Pereira – Researcher and professor at the University of Coimbra, an expert in marine biodiversity, applied biotechnology, and the valorization of macroalgae for the food and pharmaceutical industries.

Discover how Blue Forests can drive the Blue Bioeconomy and contribute to a more sustainable ocean.

In-person event, conducted in Portuguese.
