The START Rise Challenge is launching in Portugal to identify startups developing solutions based on Artificial Intelligence. The initiative aims to give visibility to high-potential projects and connect them with an ecosystem that can support their growth.
This national challenge combines competition, mentorship, and access to technological infrastructure. It positions itself as a platform to activate the AI entrepreneurial ecosystem.
What is the START Rise Challenge?
The START Rise Challenge is a joint initiative by Start Campus and Porto Business School. It was created to connect emerging talent with real opportunities to scale.
More than a traditional competition, it acts as a platform that links startups with mentors, investors, and technology partners like Microsoft. It also reinforces Portugal’s role in the European AI landscape.
The role of Porto Business School
Porto Business School joins the initiative as its academic and execution partner. It brings expertise, network, and mobilization capacity, strengthening the connection between education, innovation, and market impact.
\“In an AI-first world, the bottleneck isn’t the technology, it’s the path to impact. This initiative is our commitment to accelerating that journey,” said José Esteves, Dean of Porto Business School. “By providing a high-visibility stage for the most ambitious projects, we are ensuring that the talent shaping tomorrow has the market reach and ecosystem gravity to lead today.”
The school also positions itself as an active player in the development of the innovation ecosystem.
START Rise Challenge and the AI ecosystem in Portugal
The START Rise Challenge is part of a broader strategy to foster technological development. It helps connect talent, infrastructure, and investment.
Start Campus is developing the SINES Data Campus, an infrastructure designed to support the growth of AI-driven companies.
“Portugal has a unique opportunity to position itself as a hub for AI innovation,” said Robert Dunn, CEO of Start Campus. “Through the START Rise Challenge, we want to help bridge the gap between entrepreneurial ambition and the infrastructure required to scale – connecting startups to platforms like Microsoft Azure, and ultimately to the kind of AI-ready capacity we are developing at SINES.”
“This is about enabling the next generation of companies to be built in Portugal, and to scale globally from here,” he added.
